March.

So now i'm all settled into my new home and absolutely love my little flat. I can't believe i've already been here for a month and a half, it's just flying by.

So one of the first events I went to in March was a toga party, which was also kind of a paint party with UV paint. We donned our best bedsheets and gold glitter was absolutely everywhere.

As another event for our intentional orientation, Victoria University threw a boat party/cruise for us one evening. We all got dressed up and enjoyed the beautiful views onboard the Victoria Star whilst drinking a lot of alcohol and eating free pizza.

Around the end of my third week here myself and a few friends went to the Moomba Festival in Melbourne City. We spent the afternoon wandering round the different food stalls, game stalls and even went on a couple of the rides. As it started to get dark we went to find a spot by the river to sit and watch some of the waterskiing competitions that were taking place on the lake. Soon after, the firework display started.

Every month I try make it easier on myself and keep a draft of my monthly post updated each time I do something, but I can sometimes be a bit useless at that. I'm now struggling to remember what i've done in the past week.

The Grand Prix! I've never really been a massive fan of this on the tv despite a lot of family members loving it, I just couldn't get into it. Like a lot of things though, it's so much different when you're there for real and I actually got a little excited. Unfortunately though that night I came down with laryngitis and was knocked out for a few days! After being prescribed antibiotics I started to feel loads better, but it meant i'd have to take it easy with alcohol for a few days!

Here we go again with another night out. This wasn't for anything special, I just really like this picture!

I am a giant.

I'm not really a massive sports person, but when Uni offers you free tickets to an AFL game, you don't refuse. Our friend Tarrena supports one of the teams playing; the Freemantle Dockers, and as me Priya and Louisa aren't from Australia, we weren't really fussed with who we supported, so we chose to support Tarrena's. We all bought scarves and started to get a little excited. In the end we really enjoyed ourselves and I started to really get into the game. Unfortunately though, the Western Bulldogs won 103-38. But it was still a great day out doing something I wouldn't usually do.

Everyone knows, Jurassic Park is my all time favourite film. I just loved dinosaurs when I was younger. Coincidentally, there was a Jurassic Park exhibition in Melbourne and of course I went. It was themed as if you were actually going to the island and all the little kids were getting so excited it was adorable. There were animatronics of all the popular dinosaurs and they looked so real!

Jurassic Park; comparing book to film.

Usually with franchises like this, it's the norm to read the book, then watch the film. I did this with Harry Potter, Twilight and The Hunger Games.

However, as I stated in my last post here, I never realised that Jurassic Park was a book, until a few months ago (i'm a slow reader). 

When I was younger I was obsessed with dinosaurs, and Jurassic Park was my number 1. When I was 8 I even wanted to be a palaeontologist (Google it). So you can imagine my delight when I discovered the novel by Michael Crichton.
On the whole, the book seems a lot gorier than the film. However, it's a lot easier for violence and carnage to come across on the big screen, whereas novels rely on the heavy use of adjectives to get their points across.
There are also a few character changes within the book. For instance, Lex, who's character is around 13/14 in the movie, is actually 8 years old in the novel. I have to say I agree with Steven Spielberg on this one. I prefer Lex and Tim's relationship in the film, and this wouldn't have been the same if Lex was 8. In the movie, Timmy is the younger and 'annoying' brother whereas Lex is the more mature and stubborn older sister. Their constant arguing and bickering provides a slight comical effect that then downplays the imminent danger that they are facing, therefore making the movie more child - friendly.
Other changes between the two include some differences to the storyline.
There are a lot of things that have been changed in transition from novel to movie. Having studied Media for 4 years I know that Spielberg will have had very good reasons for doing so, and I for one am glad he did.
I enjoyed the book, but it's still the film that makes it for me. Whether it's because I broke tradition and watched the film before the book, I will never know.

My Top 5 Books.

Well, funny thing is, I don't have a top 5.

I love to read. Sometimes it's good to sit in a quiet room and take yourself off to another world like Panem or Hogwarts. Although I haven't read a massive array of books, (unless you count the likes of Jacqueline Wilson and Louise Rennison when I was younger) recently I've morphed into somewhat of a bookworm.

At the moment I'm reading Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton. Jurassic Park is definitely my most favourite film franchise (I can assure you that no one else is more excited for JP4 this summer). It was only a few months ago that I realised the movies were developed from a novel, even though it says it at the end of the film and i've watched the film 2784018 times (that is not accurate). I'm absolutely loving it so far despite having dinosaur nightmares after reading it before I go to bed!

Speaking of film franchises coming from books, the Harry Potter series is a very close second to Jurassic Park. I read the Harry Potter books as I was growing up and from the second I picked up The Philosopher's Stone, I absolutely fell in love with the wizarding world that J.K. Rowling created. My favourite book of the series has to be The Order Of The Phoenix. I read them a long time ago so I can't really remember why, I just remember enjoying that one the most, and the fact that my Mum bought me it the day it was released. That always felt pretty special to me.

Further down the age line I was introduced to the world of Panem by one of my very close friends. Reading The Hunger Games was the first time I couldn't put a book down. So naturally, I finished Catching Fire and Mockingjay a matter of weeks after starting the first one.

Then in the past year I moved onto the likes of The Fault In Our Stars by John Green (I cried), Wonder by R.J. Palacio (I cried), The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne (I cried) and The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Nighttime by Mark Haddon (I didn't cry). I also read more of John Green's books such as Will Grayson, Will Grayson and An Abundance Of Katherines.

Sat on my bookshelf waiting to be read are The Lost World (obviously), Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, Tales of Beedle The Bard, and I plan to read the Harry Potter series again because I'm such a Potterhead.

Kicking this off with 10 facts about moi.

1. I'm extremely indecisive, I change my mind about what I want to do all the time. Hopefully one day I'll make my mind up and decide what I want to be when I grow up!

2. I will never grow up. I'm nearly 20 and I still act the same as when I was 5. This will never change.

3. I will constantly complain about being skint, just after spending my entire student loan on an iPhone and a shopping spree.

4. If you don't already know, I live and breathe Arctic Monkeys.

5. I am actually struggling to write these - I hate talking about myself - even if I do talk a lot.

6. I love watching horror films, however once they're on I instantly regret it.

7. I've seen Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys, Two Door Cinema Club, Miles Kane, Bastille, Metronomy, and Tribes live. All of which were fucking mint.

8. Huge fan of comedy: I've seen Michael McIntyre, Russell Howard, Lee Evans & Jason Manford live.

9. My favourite film of all time is Jurassic Park. When I was younger I wanted to be a paleontologist because of this (look it up).

10. I hate being told what to do. Chances are if I'm told to do or not do something, I will do the complete opposite.
